FARMHOUSE

This exquisite site is set in the hills of Arroyo Grande on California's  central coast. Almost every window of the house frames an exquisite view of the surrounding greenery and could be mistaken for a landscape painting.

A collection of traditional agrarian forms flank an L-shaped courtyard with a central linear water element that pays homage to a horse trough.

The Master Bedroom and Living Room wing takes the form of barn with clerestory windows. A glass bridge connects these spaces on 2 levels to the circular stairhall reminiscent of a grain silo. A second glass connector piece connects the stairhall to a traditional farm house form that contains the family room and kitchen on the ground level, with  secondary bedrooms above. The final barn form is a car barn with a self contained guest house above.

In an effort to use green technology and meet LEED certifications, the home incorporates recycled and regional materials, and products made from rapidly renewable resources.  Passive solar technology was implemented including radiant heating in the floor, and low flow fixtures.

Project Size: 5200 SF
